The Pathway, Missouri state politics

Thursday, June 22nd, 2006

Are Southern Baptists blind followers of the Republican party? Apparently not.
The KC Buzz Blog notes that The Pathway has taken on state Republican Senator Charlie Shields.
“Missouri Senate Majority Leader Charlie Shields (right) is getting painted as an enemy of religious conservatives. In a recent edition of The Pathway, a publication of the Missouri Baptist […]

Art Gallery at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church

Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

As a matter of discipline, I wanted to use the internet to do some follow-up research on pastors and churches in the SBC that I was exposed to during the Convention last week in Greensboro.
One such search led me to Johnson Ferry Baptist Church where I found that they have an art gallery with a […]

Send New Orleans some good books!

Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

Do you have some good books in your library you could part with? Do you want to help faculty and staff at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary get back on their bibliophilic feet? In the latest PreachingNow, Dr. Duduit tells us how we can:
It’s been almost a year since Hurricane Katrina devastated the […]

Dr. Mohler’s New Blog about the SBC

Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

Dr. Mohler has begun posting on his highly-anticipated new blog Conventional Thinking.
It is a blog that talks about SBC issues.
And no, for those who speculate that Dr. Mohler ran home from Greensboro upset, and sat down and came up with this idea in response to how the convention went, he has actually had […]

Presbyterians (PCUSA) move towards gender-inclusive language for the Trinity

Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

If you are a fellow Southern Baptist and you want to put the Southern Baptist Convention squabbles into proper perspective, you should follow the PCUSA convention being held this week. In addition to opening the door further for gay-clergy, they also elected a woman to be their head bishop. And while those may be bad enough, they are also working on gender-inclusive language for the Trinity (no more “patriarchal” Father/Son/Spirit stuff).

Ray Van Neste on Expository Preaching (don’t talk about it, do it)

Sunday, June 18th, 2006

Professor Ray van Neste has a great article on the importance of DOING expository preaching rather than just TALKING about the importance of expository preaching. I highly encourage you go over HERE to his blog to read the full article. Here is a snippet:
There was [at the Southern Baptist Convention in Greensboro] great earnestness […]

Many Southern Baptists Bypassing Public Schools

Sunday, June 18th, 2006

HERE is a fairly recent (May 27, 2006) link to a National Public Radio commentary audio-clip that talks about Southern Baptists and the issue of schooling. Missourian Roger Moran is mentioned.
Printed below is a brief portion of the transcript of the audio:
Evangelical Christians, including Southern Baptists, are turning to home schooling and Christian academies […]

A Meditation Going into the Lord’s Day

Saturday, June 17th, 2006

Take all my cravings
For vain recognition
Fleshly indulgence
And worldly ambition
I want so much Lord
To make you the focus
To serve you in secret
Never be noticed
I surrender all to you
I surrender

This song comes from a new cd of music from Sovereign Grace music. Very good. Take a look at it HERE.

If you give up the fight, you give up the institutions.

Columnist E. J. Dionne gives his thoughts on what the election of Frank Page means.
He says:
“In the Southern Baptist election, Page, pastor of First Baptist Church in Taylors, S.C., defeated two candidates more closely associated with the convention’s conservative leadership, the Rev. Ronnie Floyd of Springdale, Ark., and the Rev. Jerry Sutton of Nashville. The […]

I just missed a legend

Friday, June 16th, 2006

Late Tuesday night I was among a handful of gadflies loitering in the lobby of the Greensboro Sheraton Hotel when a good friend, Georgia evangelist Keith Fordham, told me I had just missed a legend.
Seconds before I arrived Keith said the legendary George Beverly Shea had just left the lobby. I would have loved to […]

Challies comments on Mohler’s comments

Friday, June 16th, 2006

Our friend Tim Challies has a good analysis of Dr. Mohler’s session on Larry King Live last night (Thursday June 15).
FYI: I know that some at the convention told me that they are pretty new to the reading of blogs. Let me recommend that a good way to jump in with both feet […]

Turn out the lights, the party’s over

Friday, June 16th, 2006

Turn out the lights, the party’s over
I am not going to reveal what I think about the outcome of the Southern Baptist Convention’s annual meeting in Greensboro, N.C.
Not yet.
There is still too much smoke lingering over the battlefield and it will take a little time for it to clear before an honest assessment can be […]

Verbal Hubris

Friday, June 16th, 2006

This is not leadership. This is schoolyard bullying.

Greensboro by the numbers

Friday, June 16th, 2006

938 – The number of miles from Jefferson City, Missouri, to Greensboro, N.C.
11,800 – The number of registered messengers at last year’s annual meeting in Nashville, Tenn.
11,600 – The last number I saw of registered messengers at this year’s annual meeting.
1 – The number of hecklers to yell something during a business session about Jerry […]

Just a post-convention question…

Thursday, June 15th, 2006

I am more than happy and willing to get behind our new SBC President. But if I may offer one piece of advice - take a good look around you and consider whether it would be better to truly distance yourself in public and private from a few, in order to gain the trust of the thousands.
