A good word by Dr. Chapman

Friday, June 30th, 2006

Dr. Chapman has a brief blog post that asks where we (the SBC) are headed if it is the case that we do so much of our activity in human power rather than divine…
Could it be that we have become accustomed to the power generated by human will and less dependent upon the spiritual power […]

What I didn’t know was that the young man was going to give him a copy of a John Piper book.

Why be a Baptist? Why be a Southern Baptist?

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

Here are two different answers:
THIS one is from Mark Dever, pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington D.C., and founder of 9Marks Ministries.
THIS one is from Bill Wilson, pastor of First Baptist Church in Dalton, George, and part of the CBF (Cooperative Baptist Fellowship).

“The Daughter Factor” and legislating life

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

I read this in the June 25th issue of Parade magazine:
“How a male in the House of Representatives votes on bills concerning women’s saftey and reproductive rights may depend on how many daughters he has. Ebonya Washington, a Yale economist, found that legislators who have just girls - or more girls than boys - take […]

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

Michael Gerson, a top speechwriter for President Bush and the one who coined the phrase “axis of evil” is retiring. He is a native of St. Louis, having attended Westminster Christian Academy. He is also considered one of the architects of “compassionate conservativism” alongside Marvin Olasky.

Reflecting on what happened in Greensboro

Monday, June 26th, 2006

In a convention where more than 11,000 messengers confirmed that presidential candidate resumes must no longer include pastoring a gazillion-member megachurch, authoring best-selling books and having the star power associated with a nation-wide television ministry, they resoundingly affirmed their conservative instincts and strongly suggested they compose a convention that is maturing theologically.

Vacation Bible School: Arctic Edge

Monday, June 26th, 2006

All right you Southern Baptist Vacation Bible Schoolers…. now is your chance to give me some evaluation on this year’s “Arctic Edge” curriculum from Lifeway.
Are you using the Lifeway material?
If so, how did your church make the selection? Was there any option, or does the VBS crew go solely to SBC material?
What do you think […]

Duren Thoughts

Monday, June 26th, 2006

Marty Duren has some thought-provoking ideas about structural changes in the SBC. One specific idea is to encourage a grass-roots movement within the states to have state conventions split CP dollars 50-50, and eventually move to 60-40.

Prayer Request

Thursday, June 22nd, 2006

Hey everybody. Please pray for my dad Walter and his friend Ben. They are two hard-working Christian men who, among other things they do for “fun”, enjoy buying run-down houses, gutting them, fixing them back to great condition, and then selling them. More than just a way to earn a living, they also take a lot of joy and pride in their work. They bring these inner-city houses back to the market that might otherwise keep going downhill and eventually be torn down.

Kirby Godsey, long-time President of Mercer University received the “Courage Award” this week during the William Whitsitt Baptist Heritage Society meeting that takes place during the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship annual meeting.
Here is a description of the Whitsitt Society and the award:
“Founded in 1992, following 12 years of denominational infighting among Southern Baptists, the William Whitsitt […]
