SBC Annual Meeting Promises to be Spirited

Like most of the denominational press and the ubiquitous inquisitors of the blogosphere, I have been scrambling to determine whether the Southern Baptist Convention’s (SBC) annual meeting June 13-14 in Greensboro, N.C., will be like a loving family gathering or a series of drive-by shootings. I have faith that everyone will check their guns at the door. (Before you hit the send button on that letter to the editor, please realize I’m just kidding!)

It was encouraging to see U.S. Sen. Jim Talent, R-Mo., announce his opposition to the proposed November ballot initiative in which the state’s clone-to-kill lobby wants Missourians to amend their constitution to protect cloning, disguised as embryonic stem cell research.

Expressing displeasure over what they call a “narrowing of cooperation through exclusionary theological and political agendas” in the Southern Baptist Convention, a group of Southern Baptist conservatives issued a document May 3 calling on the convention to repent of such behavior.
